Crete , the largest island in Greece'(Κρήτη/Crete).It is the source of the birthplace of Western civilization, the Minoan civilization Minoan civilization, and the ancient civilization of the Aegean region. It appeared in ancient Greece, the Mycenaean civilization before the Bronze Age( 3100 BC - 1450BC). And the development of civilization are mainly concentrated in the island of Crete.

Minoan period
Crete is the oldest center of European civilization ─ ─ Minoan civilization. The origins of this civilization virtually unknown, as not much written records of the civilization left, and the words they use which is called a "linear text A" still can not be interfretted. But this civilization has left a large number of exquisite palaces, houses, roads, paintings and sculpture. 

Although the early Cretan history only left in the myths of the Homeric epics like Minos, Theseus, Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus story, the Greek historian and poet still convey the history of human settlement in the island of Crete to us. Earliest settlements dating back Neolithic, people breed cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs and other animals, and planted cereals, beans and other crops.

             

The Byzantine - during the Ottoman period 

For a long period of time, Crete is the possessions of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine),maintaining the tranquility and the still backward civilization. Until 824AD fall into the hands of the Arabs become the emirate. In 960, Byzantines re-took over the main Venice Crete.Until 1204, the fourth Crusades the owner of Crete change to Venice. In 1669, the Ottoman Turks away the Crete from the Venetian .
In 1204, Constantinople fell, and the Byzantine Empire had been carved up. Crete was vested by Venice. During the Venetian period, the Greeks in Crete nurtured by renaissance atmosphere . Utile 17th century, the Ottoman Empire defeated Venice and occupy Crete, and most of the island were degenerated into Ottoman territory.

Modern

Many people of Crete had participated in the Greek War of Independence which began in 1821 . This Christian organization riots meet fierce confrontation form Ottoman. The war killed some riot ringleaders. From 1821 to 1828, the island is always the center of the war. Estimated at that time, about 45% of the islanders are Muslim.some  of them are secret Christians converted to Christianity. Many people fled the island because of the unrest. In 1900, only 11% of the islanders still Muslim. They are often called "Turks", even if their language, culture is different and even the ancestors are not the same.  the rest of the Muslims are forced to leave  in the 1924 for Greek - Turkish population exchange event.

In World War II, the island of Crete become critical in the Battle of Crete in May 1941 . German invaders, especially paratroops, seized control of the Commonwealth and took command of the sea of  the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean.
