Kefallonia Island, ancient Greece language name is Cephallinia, located in the Ionian Sea, the largest island in the Ionian Islands. The island's name is believed to come from ancient Greek mythology hero Cephalus. Island is famous for their homeland of Odysseus in Homer's epic, the Odyssey Homer as "King of the kefallonia people". Bestselling novel and film of the same name of the Captain Corelli's Mandolin, also translated the war lover. Story set in World War II by the German army of occupation on the island. Today, the beautiful beaches and caves of the island attracts many tourists every year summer. As island is close to Italy’s mainland, it becomes the popular destination of Italy.
Besides tourism, olive oil manufacturing is an important part of the economy of the island. More than 1 million olive trees on the island covered the island 55% of the area.
Geography
The current population density is 55 inhabitants per square kilometer (140 people/square mile). Argostoli, the capital city has one third of the population on the island. Kefallinia is in Ionian earthquake Center. IT has occurred dozens of times a year minor and no record of shock. In 1953 a seismic scale 7.7 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale destroyed virtually all the buildings on the island. Cephalonia's highest point is 1628 meters above sea level. Timber exports on the island of the Ionian Islands are the highest. Island also has beaches as spawning habitats of the endangered reptiles’ turtles.

Kefallinia was ruled under the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Kingdom of Naples. In 1479, Island owned by Bertelsmann Empire and governed by Hubei Province up to 1500. Then a team of Spain, composed of the Venetian forces occupied the island. Kefallinia became the overseas territories of the Republic of Venice. After the 1797 Treaty of kanbofuerMio, France won the right to rule the Ionian Islands from Venice. Since the 16th century to the 18th century, Kefallinia and NisosZacynthus became the world's largest exporter of raisins, and has a large transport fleet.
By 1799, Kefallinia is a part of the Russian army protection. In 1807, France reoccupied it. In October 1809, occupation of Kefallinia changed to the British Empire. It becomes a part of the United States of the Ionian Islands. In 1864, the United Kingdom ceded to the United States and Greece Kingdom, Kefallinia was from Greece ruled ever since. During World War II, the island was occupied by Axis powers. In 1945, after the end of World War II, Kefallinia, Greece the civil war started. Until 1949, it was restoration of peace.
