Rodos Island is located in the eastern and southern part of Mediterranean in the Aegean. Area: 1.398 kilometer squares. Population: 117.007. Rodos Island about 78 km long and 35 km wide, and its center is about 430 km away from Athens. Rodos Island International Airport in the northwestern coast is only 17.5km away from southeast coast of Turkey. This is the place which is the  nearest to the Asia Minor. 9 kilometers west from Rodos is Erji Island; 7 kilometers away is Ali Mia Island, and some uninhabited islands in addition.

The highest point is 1215 meters above the sea level and it’s very steep especially the center of it. Hills extend to the coast and in many place become cliffs into sea. The southern and northern part are flats. Southern part became an island.

Settlements

There are 10 towns and many villages on the island.

Around half of population is live in the Rodos city. And it is also the capital and the travel center. Old towns, Palace, and magnificent walls of it has been settled as world heritage by UNESCO. There is a grand mosaic and a copy of world’s famous statuary of Rao Kuhn

Rodos is produced by the sea according to the Greek Legend. Poseidon is the protector of the island, and his daughter take charge when he is not available.

Zeus was delivering his domanial when Helios was touring heaven, so Zeus forgot him. When Helios came back, Zeus decided to redeliver. But Helios said to Zeus that he would be very glad if Zeus delivered the most beautiful island to him. Helios named the island after sea nymph Rodo because he fell in love with her.

Latter, Helios and Rodos got married and they had seven sons. And their eldest son had three sons and these three sons built the oldest cities on the island.

People settle down to this island early to the Neolithic Age. There was a large group of people until Bronze Age( around 2800 BC to 2000 BC). Minos settle down in 16 century BC, Achaea settle down in 15 century BC, Dolian settle down in 11 century BC, and they built the 3 oldest cities, which made the status of Rodos increased. Cities on the Island, Kos island and Asia Minor city, kunidous and Harry Seuss became marine city union.

Homer said Rodos provided nine ships in Trojan war.

    In 546 BC, Lydia lost the war to Persia and Rodos was invaded by Persia. Rodos evolved anti~Persia war which was aroused by Asia Minor( 500 BC TO 494 BC). But it was annexed by Persia. After losing the war, three cities of Rodos join in the Delian League in 479  BC.

    Three cities in Rodos combined as a new city, which is called Rodos now, in the north of the island in 408 BC. At that time, the most famous city planner in Grace planned this new city. After a century, this new city had already become the busiest city instead of Athens.

The Titan sculpture on Rodos is 34 meters high and it is one of the seven miracles in the world. It was destroyed in an earthquake in 227 BC. After Delian League disbanded, Rodos became totally an individual. It was able to maintain its independence against Persia in 364 BC. It was with Thebes to against the second Athens Union in 364 BC. It was on Philip II’s side in the war of Macedonia against Greece. After the death of Alexander the Great, Rodos was reborn. In 42 BC, Rodos was destroyed by Romans who were led by Eustace Cassius. But Rodos was not a part of Roman until 74 AD. Rodos belonged to Byzantine Empire after Roman Empire desperating. Arabian once captured Rodos. In 1097, Rodos was captured by Rodos. In 1204, after crusade the forth times, Rodos belonged to Venice. And then back to Byzantium.

In 1306, Rodos was sold by Genoa to Knighthood, but this knighthood had to capture it first to capture it for more than 200 years. Knighthood stopped lots of attacks of muslim. In 1522, Sueleyman lead army to capture Rodos. He shelled importance on Rodos for months and at last Knighthood lost and left Rodos in 1523’s New Year’s Day.

In 1912, may, Italy won a war and capture Rodos.

The reign of Italy was from 1912 to 1943. During this time, Rodos set stag and doe at the harbor so they became new symbols of Rodos. It is legend that these two is located on which is Helios was. Italians also built many streets and architectures.

Until 1947, Rodos was merged into Greek.
